Toilets, show tunes and projects

Today was a day full of cleaning toilets while listening to show tunes. There is something about the Wicked and Hairspray soundtracks that make my most despised job, tolerable.
Belting out “Good Morning Baltimore” while cleaning up the evidence of boys learning to aim missing completely while standing at the toilet is the perfect balance of good and evil.
.
I’ve started a project I’ve had in my mind for the last little while. I am making a quilt out of the cutest parts of my favorite baby clothes worn by all of my boys. It’s kind of sad to cut them up, but when they grow up, move out and never come to visit, this blanket will keep me warm.
And, I’ll still have my memories to keep me company.
.
Yesterday I was in Sur La Table picking up the castle cake pan for Tato’s birthday cake next week (Sheesh! it’s one after the other over here!) and I escaped only making one unplanned purchase which, in my defense, was a little red cake stand that was just too cute to leave in the store. But while I was there, I looked at cooking aprons and I was amazed at how boring, but expensive they were. I really need a new apron because my favorite one from the Salt Lake Downtown Farmers Market has seen better days.
I think I’m going to try making one. I found lots and lots of cute vintage looking aprons on Etsy, but it seems like something I want to try doing myself. I’ve never actually followed a pattern, with things like this I usually just try to wing it. That’s how I roll.
Sometimes it works. Many times, not so much.
.
But listen, tomorrow’s cooking post is going to be a good one.
We are having friends over for dinner so I’m bringing out the big guns…

I was in charge of cleaning the toilets growing up and I taught (threatened) my brothers real quick to use one square of TP to finish their job. Wonder if they still do it???…
And I have heard of people making blankets out of clothes and I know yours will look great!! What an amazing memory you are going to have for so many years to come.

So I guess you aren’t coming to Lukas blessing and dinner then? We will miss you.

I have a tub of baby clothes just waiting for this project to take shape as well. But I’m waiting MANY years to get that one started! Holy Cow–you are like me with the cakes–but mine are at least a Barrett is 4 weeks before Jake, Jake is 2 weeks before Blake, and Grayson is 2 months later. I can’t imagine 3 huge, fabulous birthday cakes that you make all within days and weeks of each other. But I do have to say….
mmmmmmmmmmm……..CAKE!!

I have always wanted to do this with my kids’ old clothes, but alas, I do not know how to quilt :-(
So I guess I need to find somebody who can that is happy to do the job for me!

It seems like you always bring out the big guns. At least I think everything seems like you do.

I made quilts of my boys baby clothes, with pictures of each ones first year. It was hard for me to cut the clothes up too…but the final product is sooo worth it. I’m sure yours will be amazing.

I love the baby quilt idea. It will be darling.
And I feel your pain on the toilets, ugh boys are very gross.

I tell my boy that if he doesn’t make it in the toilet, then he gets to clean it up himself. And guess what….he makes it! :0) I think the baby clothes quilt is genius. But this what gets me. All of your kids have equally cool/precious things such as pictures, baby books, blankets. My older two have pretty much been ripped off in that area, so I feel kinda bad that I have (or will have as soon as I place a dang order) awesome pictures of my baby. I didn’t know you 12 years ago and just wasn’t thinking ahead with Zak so they both lack in the pictures area. I just think that it is neat that you have neat memorabillia for all 3 of them.

Just for the record, I never miss…
