Itchy

I went to Cherry Hill last week and neglected to put sunscreen on my back. I got fried. Just yesterday it stopped hurting and started to really itch. Like a bear on a tree trunk, I’ve been using a variety of surfaces around the house as scratching posts. But, this morning I thought I was going to die from itchiness.

“Kelly! You have to scratch my back right now!” I pulled up the back of my shirt and waited for the relief.
Hesitantly, he started to lightly scratch with his nubby fingers. I was all, “Dude! Put some force behind it! I’m dying here.”
He said, “But the skin is peeling and it’s getting under my fingernails.” So I say, “Then peel it for crying out loud. That should help it to stop itching.”
He then said, “Listen, I know you like to do sick things like that, but I think these bodily secretions (yeah, he called my peeling skin a secretion) are disgusting.”
So, he pulled my shirt down and started rubbing it over the shirt.

Whatever. That only made it worse. I turned around and spotted T sitting on my bedroom floor. I went and sat down in front him, yanked the back of my shirt up and said, “Hey, buddy…do Momma a favor and peel that white stuff for me.” He gently patted my shoulder and said, “That looks weird. I don’t want to touch it.”

What is wrong with these guys? I LOVE to peel sunburned skin. Even if it’s not mine. Doesn’t everyone derive joy from doing this?
Just then, The Fish walked in and said, “Mom, I’m done brushing my teeth, now what’s my chore?” I seized the opportunity.
“Your chore is to peel my freaking back before I go crazy from itch.” I sat down on a stool and put him to work.

He didn’t seem bothered by it. He quietly got down to business. After a minute, he leaned over and said, “Hey, if I’m being too rough, just let me know.” I told him that would be impossible, and that if he had a steel wire brush, I’d have him use that on me.
After another minute, he said, “Mom, since you’re just sitting there, do you want me to go get your book for you?”
This is top notch service he’s providing. I said, “That is a great idea, Fish.” He ran to get the book, handed it to me with a smile, then went back to work. When he was finished, he offered to scratch, to which I said, Yes, please. And then, to top it off, he told me to let him know when I needed him again.

With all the things I worry about teaching these boys, I couldn’t help but think I’m doing a pretty good job of teaching The Fish how to take care of a lady.
I can take credit for that right?

Todd always wants me to do this for him and i really hate to do it. But since it’s him and he’s obviously really in need, I do it.

I think it’s adorable that F did that for you! What a total sweetie! He’s going to make a great husband and you’ll probably be able to take 100% of the credit.

Awww, the Fish is a sweetie!! He’s going to make some girl very happy – especially one who likes having her skin peeled – and all credit to you, Kelly!

WOW! Impressive. That was a very nice thing he did. I’m afraid I would have been with Kelly D. and just scratched through the shirt. I can peel my own but others…not so easily done. I guess if I knew it was a desperate situation. But now we are all off the hook because you have the Fish.

Is the Fish spoken for? Because I would like to hook him up with Ruby in say, 20 years?

What a great kid! Hopefully he doesn’t grow out of it. He’s going to make a fine husband one day!

FUNNY story.

I can’t believe he got you something to read in addition to attention he paid to your sunburn. He’s a sweetheart.

So… uh… I like to peel skin too. Too bad I wasn’t around! I’m still available though, so call me.

The FISH! How cute is that? Could I borrow him for like an hour?

He is so adorable! And how thoughtful, getting you your book. Maybe a lesson in sunscreen could have been provided also. :0)

You have quite the little man on your hands! You deserve a pat on the back! I would pay for this kind of service…my husband would also send me the other direction if I asked him to do this!

That’s awesome. I hope my little boy does the same for me considering my husband has the same view as yours. And I LOVE to peel things. It’s an obsession.

Wow-what a fabulous little guy! I always loved peeling sunburn off, too. Haven’t thought of that in years!

[...] We spent a good chunk of the day at a swimming pool today. Man, it was a hot one. I purposely didn’t put sunscreen on my legs because I really enjoyed peeling the skin from my 4th of July sunburn and I was hoping I could recreate that experience. I think I only succeeded in getting a sunburn on my back. This wasn’t on purpose. Now I am going to have to beg someone else to peel it. [...]
