Backyard Camping

Last night we decided it would be fun to set up the tent in the back yard and sleep in it.

We snacked on popcorn and Swedish Fish, and when it got dark, we took turns telling scary stories.

T’s stories tended to go on and on…

The Little Guy was mostly interested in the flashlight action.

When it was my turn, I told some really scary stories. Most of them I made up as I went. They included mysterious phone calls in which you could only hear breathing on the other end, or that one classic about the car that ran out of gas and the scratching sound on the roof…

Oh, I was scary alright.
t
I can’t help it, but when I would see that real moment of fear at the end of my stories, I would laugh out loud with delight. Fish said, “Mom, can you stop doing that?” Doing what? Telling scary stories? “No. Laughing like that, you’re creeping me out.” Ok. No more evil laughing.

In the middle of our fun, Kelly D. skulked out to the tent and growled so loudly and suddenly that it scared all of us. Not funny, Dad. (Ok, kinda funny.)

If you’re thinking I am an awful mother for telling scary stories to such little kids, fear not. I paid the price.
All night long as we tried to go to sleep, I had to keep reassuring the boys:
Those are crickets.
That was a car door closing.
That is the wind.
There isn’t a giant eye outside the tent window.

On the plus side, I’ve never been snuggled so close by my kids in my life.

We woke up with the sun, and the sound of birds outside the tent. Loved that.

We stayed in our warm sleeping bags for another hour until the idea of pancakes got the better of us.

It was the 2nd worst night of sleep in my entire life.
Totally worth it.

That’s so sweet, I love that last picture. I thought I was living the life because my husband took Abbey on the stake father-son campout last night (uh…yeah, no sons around here) But after looking at these pictures, I think he may have had the better end of the deal.

So fun! Your pictures are beautiful, I love whatever it is that makes it so washed out. :)

(Those are technical terms, I assure you)

You ROCK! And where was KD all night? Sleeping comfortable in his bed snuggle with Molly probably :) I’m a wimp with ghost stories, trust me I would have screamed when KD did the sneak thing. I’m a scary’d cat!

Backyard camping is the BEST! I can’t wait for it to be warmer here so we can do it again.

So fun. I love the view out your tent door too. Someday I’ll have a cool yard like that. :^)

What was the worst night of sleep ever? I smell a story. And since you’re in it is is sure to be a good one. Was there farting and vomit involved?

What a great idea and fun memory to make with the kids. I thought about doing that the other night and then thought I don’t want a crappy night of sleep. You have inspired me to go ahead and make the memory and have the bad night of sleep. Thanks! YOu are great.
